Highly rated centre-back Nnamdi Collins is set to become the latest Borussia Dortmund youngster to be promoted to the first team squad. According to BILD, the 17 year old will start training with the senior team in the summer.
Collins is considered to be one of the best young prospects in the Borussia Dortmund academy, and was promoted from the U-17s to the U-19s team before the start of this season. He made four appearances for the U-19s before the season was brought to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now the defender is set for another promotion.
A number of English Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester City, were interested in signing Collins last year. But he rejected interest from them to sign a new three year contract with Borussia Dortmund.
BILD add that Nnamdi Collins will regularly train with the first team starting from next season. And at the same time, he will continue to play for the Borussia Dortmund U-19s so he can gain match rhythm and experience.
Collins joined Borussia Dortmund in 2016 and has enjoyed a rapid rise in recent seasons. His performances for the U-17s last season saw him earn a place in the Black and Yellows’ squad for the pre-season training camp in Switzerland in August. He went on to make his debut for the senior team in pre-season friendly against Sparta Rotterdam in September.
He will now be looking to follow in the footsteps of former teammate Youssoufa Moukoko, who became the youngest player to ever play in the Bundesliga in November.
