Rumour: Borussia Dortmund could consider selling Axel Witsel this summer
Axel Witsel reportedly faces an uncertain future at Borussia Dortmund, with SportBILD claiming that the midfielder could be allowed to leave the club in the summer.
Witsel, who is out until the end of the season with a torn achilles tendon, has just over one year left on his current contract with Borussia Dortmund. Recently, he signalled his desire to extend his stay with the Black and Yellows. But it remains to be seen what the club’s plans are for the Belgian international.
The 32 year old earns an annual salary of eight million euros. And if Borussia Dortmund miss out on qualifying for Champions League football, they may have to consider selling him for financial reasons.
Axel Witsel joined Borussia Dortmund from Tianjin Quanjian in 2018, and was a regular starter in the team before suffering his season-ending injury during the game against RB Leipzig in January. He has made a total of 104 appearances for Der BVB so far.
SportBILD add that Manuel Akanji may also be allowed to leave in the summer transfer window. The Swiss international’s contract is also set to expire at the end of next season. But Ruhr Nachrichten reported last week that Borussia Dortmund would like to hand him a contract extension.
The contracts of Thomas Delaney and Dan-Axel Zagadou are also set to expire at the end of the 2021/22 season. So the BVB bosses will have to decide on their futures in the coming weeks and months. Zagadou has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery.
