Borussia Dortmund beaten by Eintracht Frankfurt leaving Champions League hopes in tatters

Borussia Dortmund’s hopes of finishing in the Bundesliga top four are all but over after they suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.
In what was a must-win game for Borussia Dortmund, they started well and created a couple of early openings. But it was Eintracht Frankfurt who took the lead, with Nico Schulz putting a looping header past the reach of Marwin Hitz and into his own net in the 11th minute.
Erling Haaland, who was making his 50th appearance for the Black and Yellows, then had a couple of good chances to make it 1-1. But he fired his first shot wide, before forcing a save from Kevin Trapp just a few minutes later.
Borussia Dortmund finally got their equaliser on the stroke of half time. It was Mats Hummels who swept the ball home from six yards out to make it 1-1 going into the break.
The second half was a very open affair, with both sides struggling to defend. But clear cut chances were still few and far between. As a result of their national team commitments over the last two weeks, the Borussia Dortmund players began to tire in the second half. And Eintracht Frankfurt looked the more likely to score as the game went on.
The Eagles thought they had their lead back in the 65th minute when Stefan Ilsanker headed home from a well-taken free-kick. But the goal was ruled out by VAR for offside.
Eintracht Frankfurt weren’t to be denied though, as Andre Silva capitalised on some poor defending and turned home Filip Kostić’s cross past Marwin Hitz in the 88th minute. Silva’s 22nd goal of the season proved to be the winner, as Borussia Dortmund were handed their tenth league defeat of the campaign.
The result means that Eintracht Frankfurt now have a seven point lead over Borussia Dortmund. And unless Adi Hütter’s side somehow manage to implode in the final seven games, it looks like the Black and Yellows will not be playing Champions League football next season.
