Emre Can (4/10)

It was a game to forget for Emre Can right from the start. He made two sloppy errors in the opening stages of the game which went unpunished. But he then followed them up by cheaply giving the ball away before Manchester City’s opener.

He must have thought that his evening was about to get a lot worse when referee Ovidiu Hategan awarded Manchester City a penalty for an apparent high boot. The decision was later reversed, but Can continued to struggle for the rest of the game.

Mahmoud Dahoud (6/10)

Dahoud showed glimpses of his quality and nearly set-up Haaland for the equaliser early in the second half. He looked brave in possession and always tried to find the forward pass. He will feel though, that he let Kevin de Bruyne go past him way too easily in the build-up to City’s opener. Had he made a challenge or even a tactical foul then, the goal would have been prevented.

Jude Bellingham (8/10)

Bellingham was undoubtedly Borussia Dortmund’s best player on the night. He had a spring in his step and wasn’t afraid of going toe to toe with the Manchester City players. He was full of energy and pressing, showing more determination than any other player on the pitch. He should have been rewarded for his efforts with a goal. But the referee made an absolute howler to deny him. The young midfielder also played a role in Marco Reus’ equaliser.
