Borussia Dortmund were left frustrated due to refereeing howlers and individual mistakes as they suffered a 2-1 defeat in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against Manchester City.

The two sides came into this fixture in very different form. Manchester City had won 26 of their last 27 games before Tuesday’s clash, while Borussia Dortmund had won just one of five since Jadon Sancho’s injury.

While the game was not the lopsided contest the form book suggested it would be, City enjoyed the lions share of the ball and were ultimately rewarded with a win. Goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden either side of Marco Reus’s equaliser gave City a 2-1 home win.

It is a defeat but not the worst result for Borussia Dortmund, and they may very well feel hard done by not to come away with more. Here are three takeaways from the first leg meeting.
