Borussia Dortmund secretly extended the contract of Manuel Akanji in 2019, and his current deal now runs until the end of the 2022/23 season. This is being reported by BILD, who claim that the Swiss international now earns an annual salary of 4.5 million euros. BILD’s report has also been confirmed by Kicker.

Akanji’s contract was previously thought to expire at the end of next season. But with two years still left on his contract now, Borussia Dortmund no longer have to make a decision on his future this summer.

Akanji, who joined Borussia Dortmund from FC Basel in January 2018, has been a reliable presence in defence for the Black and Yellows this season. He has made a total of 31 appearances for the club across all competitions, and has scored two goals.

Mats Hummels has an extension option in his Borussia Dortmund contract

Kicker also report that Mats Hummels contains an extension option in his contract. Hummels’ deal is set to expire at the end of next season, but the option means that it can be extended for another year. Hummels has made 39 appearances for Borussia Dortmund this season, and has five goals to his name.

There is no such option in Dan-Axel Zagadou’s contract, which is also due to expire in 2022. But Kicker add that the BVB bosses will hold intensive talks over a new contract for the defender in the near future. Ruhr Nachrichten also reported last month that Dortmund would like to extend Zagadou’s contract. Injuries have limited Zagadou to just 13 appearances this season.
