Jude Bellingham’s maiden Champions League goal wasn’t enough as Manchester City came from behind to knock Borussia Dortmund out of the UEFA Champions League in the quarterfinals (2-4 on aggregate).

Looking to overturn their first leg deficit, Borussia Dortmund made an excellent start to the game and took the lead after just 15 minutes with Jude Bellingham smashing the ball into the top corner to make it 2-2 on aggregate. The goal helped the 17 year old midfielder become the second youngest player to score in a Champions League knockout game.

Borussia Dortmund began to sit back after taking the lead, inviting Manchester City to come at them. The Premier League giants nearly equalised on the night just ten minutes later, but Kevin de Bruyne was denied by the crossbar. Bellingham then made a vital contribution on the other end of the pitch, as he blocked Riyad Mahrez’s goal-bound effort.

Edin Terzic’s side were able to hold on to their lead going into the break, but City’s wave of pressure did not stop in the second half.

Despite all of their possession, Man City needed a poor decision from Emre Can and a controversial call from the referee to take the lead on aggregate. The Borussia Dortmund midfielder headed the ball onto his outstretched arm inside the box, and the referee pointed to the spot. The dubious call stood after a VAR check, and Mahrez converted the penalty to make it 1-1 on the night.

Borussia Dortmund never really recovered from the goal, and Phil Foden sealed Manchester City’s progress to the semi-finals by beating Marwin Hitz with a rather tame effort from the edge of the box.

With Borussia Dortmund now needing three unanswered goals to progress, Edin Terzic decided to bring on Julian Brandt and Steffen Tigges. But the Black and Yellows weren’t able to pull off what would have been a comeback for the ages. Manchester City saw the game out quite comfortably in the end, ending Dortmund’s Champions League run.
