By Tushar Bahl
It was another fascinating weekend of action in the Bundesliga, as Borussia Dortmund clawed their way back into the top four race, while Schalke suffered yet another big defeat.
Bayern Munich extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings to seven points with a 3-2 win over Wolfsburg. Jamal Musiala was the star of the show for the Bavarians, scoring a vital brace. But the result was overshadowed by Hansi Flick’s decision to step down as head coach at the end of the season.
Eintracht Frankfurt suffered a crushing 4-0 defeat at the hands of Borussia Mönchengladbach. Jonas Hofmann led the way for Marco Rose’s side, as Adi Hütter was handed a comprehensive defeat by his future employers.
Borussia Dortmund took full advantage of Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt dropping points, as they came from behind to beat Werder Bremen 4-1. Milot Rashica gave Bremen the lead, before goals from Gio Reyna, Erling Haaland (x2) and Mats Hummels helped the Black and Yellows earn an impressive comeback win.
Edin Terzic’s side are now four points behind fourth placed Eintracht Frankfurt, with five games left in the season.
RB Leipzig had a goal ruled out in the 96th minute, as they could only manage a goalless draw at home to TSG Hoffenheim.
Bundesliga: Schalke 04 on the verge of relegation
Schalke 04 are just one defeat away from relegation to the 2. Bundesliga after suffering a 4-0 defeat to SC Freiburg. Christian Günter scored his first career brace to help Christian Streich’s side earn a dominant win.
Bayer Leverkusen kept their hopes of finishing in the top four alive with a 3-0 win over FC Köln. Leon Bailey scored a brace, and Moussa Diaby also found the net for Hannes Wolf’s side.
Union Berlin continued their impressive season with a 2-1 win at home to VfB Stuttgart. Grischa Prömel and Petar Musa scored to give Union Berlin a two goal lead going into the break, before Philipp Förster scored what proved to be nothing more than a consolation goal for Stuttgart in the 49th minute.
FC Augsburg and Arminia Bielefeld played out a goalless draw. While Hertha Berlin’s relegation six-pointer against Mainz 05 was postponed after the Berliners had to go into home quarantine due to multiple positive COVID-19 tests at the club.
