Erling Haaland brace helps Borussia Dortmund win massive six pointer against Wolfsburg
Borussia Dortmund are well and truly back in the top four race after Erling Haaland’s brace helped them earn a 2-0 win over Wolfsburg.
Needing a win to keep their chances of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League alive, Borussia Dortmund took the lead in the 12th minute after Ridle Baku’s poor back pass sent Erling Haaland through on goal. The Norwegian international pounced on the loose ball and slotted it home to give his side the early breakthrough they so desperately needed.
Wolfsburg dominated the game in terms of chances and possession. But their lack of quality in the final third meant that Marwin Hitz was hardly ever troubled in the Borussia Dortmund goal.
The home side continued their dominance in the second half, but it was Borussia Dortmund who came closest to scoring. Erling Haaland forced a save from Koen Casteels, before Manuel Akanji had a header cleared off the line.
Wolfsburg were given another lifeline at the hour mark, when Jude Bellingham was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. But they were simply unable to make their dominance count, as Dortmund defended with great resolve.
And Edin Terzic’s side were rewarded for their defensive discipline in the 68th minute, when Mahmoud Dahoud won the ball back on the edge of his own box and sent Haaland through on goal. The Borussia Dortmund striker raced to the other end and kept his composure to make it 2-0.
The goal helped the Black and Yellows secure a massive win, as they cut the gap to Wolfsburg to just two points. And following Bayer Leverkusen’s win over Eintracht Frankfurt, Dortmund are now only a point behind the Eagles. With just three games to go in the Bundesliga season, the top four race is well and truly open once again.
