Borussia Dortmund II remain on course for promotion despite being held to 3-3 draw by Schalke
Borussia Dortmund II let a three goal lead slip, as they were held to a 3-3 draw by rivals Schalke 04 in the Regionalliga West on Saturday. Despite the result, the young Black and Yellows still remain very much on course for promotion.
Looking to continue their promotion charge, the Borussia Dortmund U-23s made a fast start to the derby and raced to a three goal lead after just 35 minutes.
Dominik Wanner scored the opener in the eighth minute, before Tobias Raschl made it 2-0 from the penalty spot. Albin Thaqi then netted Dortmund’s third goal from a corner in the 35th minute, as Enrico Maaßen’s side looked to be on course for a straightforward win. But Schalke pulled a goal back through Jan-Luca Schuler soon after, giving them hope of a second half comeback.
Schalke’s second goal arrived close to the hour mark, and it had a stroke of luck attached to it. Marouane Balouk’s shot from inside the box took a big deflection, putting it beyond the reach of Luca Unbehaun and into the back of the net.
It looked like Borussia Dortmund would hang on for the three points. But Tobias Raschl handled the ball inside the box in the 92nd minute, and Schalke were awarded a penalty. Marouane Balouk stepped up and equalised with the final kick of the game. And the BVB U-23s had to settle for a point in the end.
The result means that Borussia Dortmund II now have a seven point lead over second placed Rot-Weiss Essen at the top of the Regionalliga West standings. Although Essen do have a game in hand. BVB II have five games left to play this season, and their next game will see them take on SV Rödinghausen on May 08.
