Sebastian Kehl expects Mateu Morey to be out for a long time with serious knee injury

Mateu Morey suffered a serious knee injury during Borussia Dortmund’s DFB-Pokal semifinal win over Holstein Kiel on Saturday. And Sebastian Kehl expects him to be out for a long time.

Borussia Dortmund qualified for the DFB-Pokal final with a 5-0 win over Holstein Kiel on Saturday. But the result was overshadowed as Mateu Morey had to be carried off on a stretcher after suffering a heartbreaking knee injury in the 75th minute.

Sebastian Kehl gave an initial diagnosis on Morey’s injury during an appearance on Sport1’s Doppelpass. The Borussia Dortmund head of players’ department said that while the exact diagnosis on the injury is still pending, the Spaniard has suffered a “serious ligament and capsule injury” which will keep him out for a long time.

"“You could see right away that he was very badly injured,” Kehl said. “His screams could be heard for a very long time in the stadium, and even in the dressing room afterwards. We are all very, very sorry for the boy. He will be out for a long time.”"

Morey’s Borussia Dortmund teammates and coaches were visibly distraught after the game, with head coach Edin Terzic saying, “it was a perfect evening up until the 75th minute.”

Emre Can told Sky after the game that all Borussia Dortmund players are behind Morey, and will support him no matter how long he is out for. “Our thoughts are with him. It hurts us, it hurts everyone on the team. We will support him no matter how long he is out.”

While Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said that all Borussen have Morey in their thoughts. “I think that today all Borussen and many more people have Mateu in their thoughts,” Watzke told told SID. “The pictures looked terrible. We now need an exact diagnosis and can only hope it’s not that bad.”

The injury is a gutting blow for both Morey and Borussia Dortmund. The highly rated right-back has had to deal with a number of serious injuries over the course of his career so far with Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona.
