Late Jadon Sancho winner helps Borussia Dortmund see off RB Leipzig
By Tushar Bahl
Jadon Sancho scored an 87th minute winner as Borussia Dortmund earned a 3-2 win over RB Leipzig to move up to fourth place in the Bundesliga standings.
Goals from Marco Reus and Jadon Sancho had earlier given the Black and Yellows a two goal lead. But Leipzig responded brilliantly and pulled themselves back level thanks to Lukas Klostermann and Dani Olmo. But Dortmund weren’t to be denied, as Sancho scored what proved to be the winner in the 87th minute.
The game got off to a fast start, with both goalkeepers forced into making early saves. It wasn’t long before the first goal arrived. And it was Marco Reus who smashed home the opener after some gorgeous link up play with Lukasz Piszczek and Thorgan Hazard.
The goal gave Borussia Dortmund the momentum boost they needed, as they managed to take control of the game after that. The Black and Yellows created some decent half chances, with Thorgan Hazard and Jadon Sancho both coming close to scoring. But it was Reus’ seventh minute strike that separated the two sides going into the break.
Borussia Dortmund suffered another injury blow in the first half, as Marwin Hitz was forced off after an awkward collision with Manuel Akanji. Roman Bürki replaced him in goal, making his first BVB appearance since late January.
Leipzig began the second half on the front foot, but Jadon Sancho beat Peter Gulacsi from a tight angle to double Dortmund’s advantage against the run of play.
Despite their deficit Julian Nagelsmann’s side continued to pile on the pressure, and Lukas Klostermann made it 2-1 just after the hour mark. Dani Olmo then took advantage of some lazy Dortmund defending and fired past Bürki from close range to give Leipzig a deserved equaliser in the 77th minute.
But just when it looked like Dortmund would be dropping crucial points in the race for the top four, Jadon Sancho stepped up to make it 3-2. The England international tapped Raphael Guerreiro’s low cross home at the end of a lovely move.
Sancho’s second goal of the afternoon sealed a vital win for Edin Terzic’s side, and helped them move into the top four. Eintracht Frankfurt blew their chance to move back up to fourth place, as they could only manage a 1-1 draw against Mainz 05 on Sunday.
Next up for Borussia Dortmund is a trip to Berlin to take on RB Leipzig in the final of the DFB-Pokal on Thursday.
