Borussia Dortmund 3-2 RB Leipzig: Key Talking Points from Bundesliga win
Borussia Dortmund show that they can score without Erling Haaland
Coming into this game, one of the many fears for Borussia Dortmund was the absence of Erling Haaland, their main goal threat. While some pointed to Dortmund’s drubbing of Kiel in the DFB Pokal a week prior as evidence that they can manage without the Norwegian goal machine, others pointed to the difference in the quality of opposition.
It goes without saying that Borussia Dortmund would’ve loved to have had their star striker out on the pitch for this game, but the important thing is that they managed without him against higher level opposition. Dortmund have in large part become a Haaland-reliant team this season, which has been important for them to stay afloat and within striking distance of the Champions League place they now occupy, but I think the games against Kiel and now Leipzig have allowed other players to either find form or build on a run of form that perhaps they didn’t have earlier in the season.
Dortmund have been forced to find goals from other areas on the pitch, and many of the players have stepped up. Both Marco Reus and Jadon Sancho have been on a stunning run of form as of late, and I think this game really allowed both to shine.
Edin Terzic will of course be hoping that Haaland is fit and ready for the upcoming game on Thursday, but Saturday’s victory will hopefully serve as fuel that will help the other players maintain their form and go into this game with only victory in mind.
