Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland both scored twice as Borussia Dortmund thumped RB Leipzig 4-1 to win the DFB-Pokal.
Buoyed by the returning Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham, Borussia Dortmund made a dream start to the game and opened the scoring in just the fifth minute. Marco Reus’ won possession in the Dortmund half, before picking out Haaland. The Norwegian international held the ball up really well before finding Mahmoud Dahoud, who passed the ball to Jadon Sancho. And the England international made no mistake from the edge of the box, as he curled his shot beautifully past Péter Gulácsi.
The goal gave Borussia Dortmund the breathing space they needed, and they were happy to let Leipzig have more of the ball after that. But they also pressed with great intensity and looked absolutely menacing on the counter-attack.
Erling Haaland made it 2-0 on one such counter-attack after Marco Reus pounced on a stray-ball. The Norwegian international still had a lot to do, but managed to beat Dayot Upamecano quite easily before finishing past Péter Gulácsi.
Borussia Dortmund then got their third on the stroke of half time. This time it was Mats Hummels who won the ball back and began a quick-fire counter-attack. Marco Reus then raced through on goal, before squaring the ball to Jadon Sancho, who made it 3-0.
RB Leipzig began the second half on the front foot, and pulled a goal back through a gorgeous strike from Dani Olmo. But Borussia Dortmund finally sealed the win in the 87th minute when Erling Haaland scored from the edge of the box after another blistering counter-attack.
The goal helped Borussia Dortmund win the DFB-Pokal for the fifth time in the club’s history. It was a thoroughly deserved win for the Black and Yellows, who were the more clinical team and made their chances count when it mattered.
