Lukasz Piszczek was an emotional man after helping Borussia Dortmund win the DFB-Pokal on Thursday. The veteran right-back, who is set to call time on his professional playing career at the end of the season, said that he won’t forget this day for the rest of his life.

Borussia Dortmund won the DFB-Pokal with a 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig in the final on Thursday. After the game, the BVB players celebrated Lukasz Piszczek by hoisting him up in the air. The former Poland international covered his face as he broke down in tears from what was a truly special moment.

"“I always said I wanted to end my career here with a trophy,” Piszczek said after the game. “Today we did it and I’m very proud.”“Those were pure emotions. I broke down. I knew my career was coming to an end and I couldn’t have imagined this in my best dreams. Today it came true. Thanks to the team.”“The championships and the previous cup wins were very nice. But I will remember this day for my whole life, because this was very special for me. I just can’t describe it, I’m still very emotional.”"

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke also heaped praise on Piszczek, calling him a hero. In an interview with ARD after the game, Watzke said: “Lukasz is my own personal hero because he has been such a stabilising force in recent weeks. What he has done for us since 2010 – that’s a hell of a story.”

Piszczek has been one of the very few constants at Borussia Dortmund since joining the club on a free transfer from Hertha Berlin in 2010. He has made a total of 381 appearances for the Black and Yellows over the last 11 years. And even at the age of 35, he is remains as reliable and consistent as ever.

Over the course of his Borussia Dortmund career, Piszczek has won two Bundesliga titles, three DFB-Pokal trophies, and three DFL-Supercups. He will now return to Poland to play for hometown club LKS Goczalkowice. He will also help run the youth academy in his hometown, which he established in 2019.
