Mainz 05 vs Borussia Dortmund: Match Preview and Team News
Borussia Dortmund will face Mainz this upcoming Sunday in what will be one of the two final tests they face in the race to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Borussia Dortmund are fresh off of an impressive 4-1 win against RB Leipzig in the DFB-Pokal final, a result that will surely have lifted the team’s confidence through the roof. The all important win sealed their first serious piece of silverware since the 2017 DFB-Pokal. It also extended their win streak to six, an impressive turn around in form that has put them in the driving seat of their own Champions League destiny.
Mainz find themselves at the opposite end of the table sitting in12th place, but with two games to go, they are five points clear of the relegation playoff spot, currently occupied by Arminia Bielefeld. Their position isn’t as secure as they would like as they have to play not only Dortmund, but also Wolfsburg in the final two matchdays. Mainz will likely be pushing extremely hard to scrape by with whatever points they can, and they have proven that they can beat top notch opposition in previous encounters this season.

As we’ve already mentioned, Borussia Dortmund’s recent form has been quite good overall. They’ve taken victories from all of their last 6 matches, which has put them in a pole position to qualify for the Champions League. Winning the DFB Pokal should also prove to be an immense boost to the team’s confidence and form.
That being said, Dortmund will still have to be careful to make sure their confidence does not translate to underestimating their opponents. Even with the recent success the team has achieved, they still need to make sure that they keep any lapses in concentration at bay.

While not as impressive as Dortmund’s run of form, Mainz’s recent results are nothing to sniff at, either. While they are still not too far from the relegation zone, Mainz have had an impressive run of form since the turn of the year. Along the way they’ve managed to take three points from the likes of Leipzig, Gladbach and most recently Bayern.
Bo Svensson has done a remarkable job since taking over at Mainz in January. With their sights firmly set on staying up in the Bundesliga, the 05ers may prove to be quite the thorn in Dortmund’s side this coming Sunday.
