Mats Hummels is set to make a stunning return for the German national team, with multiple reports claiming that the Borussia Dortmund defender will be named in Joachim Löw’s squad for the upcoming European Championships.
Joachim Löw will reveal Germany’s Euro 2020 squad on Wednesday afternoon, and both Sport1 and BILD are now reporting that Mats Hummels will be included. The 32 year old hasn’t played for his country since November 2018, but he is now set to make his return.
Hummels has earned 70 caps for Germany, and played a vital role in helping his country win the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Hummels was made unavailable for selection by Joachim Löw in March 2019, along with then Bayern Munich teammates Thomas Müller and Jerome Boateng. Now Hummels and Müller are both set to make their Germany returns, but a recall for Boateng appears to be unlikely.
Löw will be hopeful that the returning Hummels and Müller can help turn things around for Germany, who have endured a difficult period since the 2018 World Cup.
While Hummels will be in the Germany squad for the Euros, Marco Reus will not. The Borussia Dortmund captain revealed on Instagram on Tuesday that he will not be taking part in the European Championships this summer in order to give his body more time to recover.
Borussia Dortmund midfielder Emre Can is also set to be included in the Germany squad, while Julian Brandt and Mahmoud Dahoud are both in with an outside chance.
Germany will face France, Portugal and Hungary in the group stage of the Euros, which are due to get underway on June 11.
