Borussia Dortmund extended the contract of youth academy product Vasco Walz, with the midfielder signing a new two year deal. The young Dortmund midfielder’s contract was set to expire this coming summer, and there were a few clubs eyeing the youngster intently. Dortmund have acted quickly to make sure their young gem’s future is in Black and Yellow, however.

Of the clubs interested in Walz, it was said that Barcelona and AC Milan held the most interest in his talents. Milan in particular saw him as a prime target to “bolster their youth ranks”.

Barcelona, on their end, were also very interested in the BVB U-17s captain, and have shifted their focus to adding to the number of young players that they develop through their famous La Masia Academy, which is something they had strayed from for some time up until more recently.

Speaking to Ruhr Nachrichten, BVB director of youth training centre Lars Ricken laid out the plan they have concocted for Walz’ general career progression, with the talented youngster set to join the U19’s team next season to continue his development. He will also get the chance to play in the UEFA Youth League next season.

Walz is considered to be a player with immense potential and could find himself following in the footsteps of the likes of Youssoufa Moukoko and Ansgar Knauff should his development continue in this vein.

Borussia Dortmund have become experts in integrating young players and providing them with both increased minutes and increased responsibility at the right time, which means that that Vasco Walz is in one of the best possible places for his young career to begin to flourish, and his signing a new contract with the club is a clear indicator that he knows it as well.
