Erling Haaland and Marco Reus were both on target as Borussia Dortmund bid farewell to Lukasz Piszczek with a 3-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen.
Edin Terzic made wholesale changes to the side that beat Mainz last weekend, with Jadon Sancho, Mats Hummels and Raphael Guerreiro all being rested. Lukasz Piszczek captained the side in what was the final competitive game of his playing career.
Borussia Dortmund made the perfect start to the game with Erling Haaland scoring the opener after just five minutes. The Norwegian international got on the end of Reinier’s through ball and smashed it into the back of the net for his 40th goal of the season.
The rest of the first half was a cagey affair. But Roman Bürki was still forced into action. He made an excellent save to deny Paulinho in the 36th minute.
Borussia Dortmund then doubled their lead early in the second half, as Marco Reus beat Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukáš Hrádecký with a beautifully struck free-kick. Leverkusen tried to find their way back into the game, but weren’t able to get the better of Bürki. The Swiss goalkeeper was in fine form and made a total of six saves.
Erling Haaland then sealed the three points for the Black and Yellows in the 84th minute after taking advantage of some poor defending from the away side.
Lukasz Piszczek was given a special guard of honour by his teammates in the 75th minute, as he came off after making his 382nd and final appearance as a Borussia Dortmund player.
Leverkusen did manage to pull a goal back late on, with the retiring Lars Bender scoring from the penalty spot moments after coming on. But Borussia Dortmund cruised to a 3-1 win which was enough to secure a third place finish in the Bundesliga standings.
