Borussia Dortmund II earned a 3-1 win over SV Straelen on Sunday to move back to the top of the Regionalliga West standings.

Borussia Dortmund II returned to action following their COVID-19 enforced break on Sunday, as they took on SV Straelen in the Regionalliga West. Enrico Maaßen’s side went into the game two points behind RW Essen in the table, and needed a win to get momentum back on their side.

The COVID-19 enforced break had meant that the BVB U-23s hadn’t played in a month. And they struggled early in the game, as Straelen took the lead in the 13th minute through Kaito Mizuta.

The goal woke Dortmund up and they began to get on the front foot after that. And the pressure finally paid off on the stroke of half time, as the Black and Yellows were awarded a penalty. Tobias Raschl stepped up and scored the spot-kick to make it 1-1 going into the break.

Borussia Dortmund II came out for the second half determined to get the three points. It was Ansgar Knauff who broke the deadlock in the 70th minute after some gorgeous play on the left side. The highly rated winger played a nice one-two with Steffen Tigges, before lobbing the ball into the back of the net.

Alaa Bakir then made sure of the win five minutes from time, as he came off the bench to make it 3-1.

The win helped Borussia Dortmund II move back to the top of the Regionalliga West standings, as RW Essen suffered a 2-1 defeat to FC Köln II. BVB II now hold a one point lead at the top of the table, and have two games in hand on their promotion rivals.
