Axel Witsel has taken another important step on his road to recovery, with the Borussia Dortmund midfielder back on the training pitch ahead of the Euros.

Witsel suffered a torn achilles tendon in January, which saw him miss the entire second half of the season with Borussia Dortmund. Despite his injury, the midfielder was named in Belgium’s 26-man squad for this summer’s European Championships. And now he is back on the pitch.

It remains to be seen whether Witsel will be able to take part in the Euros. Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez said while announcing his squad that they will give Witsel as much time as he needs to get back to full fitness. And a final decision on his involvement will be made on June 11, ahead of the Red Devils’ first group stage game.

Witsel’s return to the pitch is also a big boost for Borussia Dortmund, who are planning with him for next season. The 32 year old was a crucial player for the Black and Yellows before his injury. And new head coach Marco Rose will no doubt be hoping that he can be fully fit in time for the start of the new season. The BVB bosses are in close contact with the Belgium nation team.
