Chelsea’s win over Manchester City in the final of the UEFA Champions League means that Borussia Dortmund will be in pot two for the group stage draw of next season’s tournament.

Borussia Dortmund needed either Manchester United to win the Europa League final or Chelsea to win the Champions League final to avoid slipping into pot three for next season’s group stage draw. While Villarreal defeated Manchester United in the Europa League final, Chelsea managed to earn a 1-0 win over Manchester City in the Champions League final on Saturday.

The result is a big help to Borussia Dortmund, who will now be in pot two. This means that Marco Rose’s side will avoid a number of big teams in the UEFA Champions League group stage next season. FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, Paris St. Germain, Manchester United, Liverpool and FC Sevilla are the other seven teams who will be in pot two.

Pot one is reserved for the Champions League winners, Europa League winners and champions of the best ranked countries according to UEFA association coefficient. Teams are placed in the remaining three pots depending on their UEFA club coefficient, which takes into account performances in the Champions League and Europa League over the last five years.
