Two Borussia Dortmund players were in action on Sunday, as Switzerland went up against the United States in an international friendly. Manuel Akanji helped Switzerland pick up a come from behind 2-1 win against Gio Reyna and the USMNT.

Gio Reyna started for the United States, while Manuel Akanji was named on the Switzerland bench as the two sides faced off in St. Gallen on Sunday evening.

The USMNT made a dream start to the game and opened the scoring in just the fifth minute, with LA Galaxy’s Sebastian Lletget making it 1-0. It was Reyna’s initial cross that led to the goal. But their lead was short-lived, as former Wolfsburg left-back Ricardo Rodríguez equalised with a deflected effort from the edge of the box just five minutes later.

Rodríguez had a golden opportunity to give Switzerland the lead in the 41st minute after Barcelona full-back Sergiño Dest was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box. But he sent his spot-kick wide.

Manuel Akanji came on at half-time for Switzerland. But he could only watch as Borussia Dortmund teammate Gio Reyna struck the outside of the post with a fine low effort from the edge of the box. Some poor defending from the United States then allowed Switzerland to take advantage, with Steven Zuber scoring what proved to be the winner in the 63rd minute.

The game ended 2-1 in Switzerland’s favour, giving them a boost ahead of next month’s European Championships. Manuel Akanji and co. still have one more friendly to play (against Liechtenstein) before their Euro 2020 opener against Wales.

The United States are set to take part in two tournaments this summer. They will play in the CONCACAF Nations League semi-finals, before the Gold Cup kicks-off in July. However, Reyna will not be taking part in the latter tournament.
