Borussia Dortmund: Gio Reyna will not take part in the Concacaf Gold Cup
United States international Gio Reyna will not be taking part in the Concacaf Gold Cup, as it would clash with the pre-season preparations at Borussia Dortmund.
Gio Reyna is currently on international duty with the United States and will play in the Concacaf Nations League semi-finals later this month. The USMNT is also due to take part in the Concacaf Gold Cup in July, but the 18 year old will not be involved in that tournament.
The reason for this is that the Gold Cup final is due to take place on August 01. And with the 2021/22 Bundesliga season getting underway on August 13, Reyna would have to miss the entire pre-season as well as the first few games of the new season if he takes part in that tournament.
In an interview with Ruhr Nachrichten, Borussia Dortmund head of players’ department Sebastian Kehl confirmed that Reyna will miss the Gold Cup.
Borussia Dortmund are due to begin their pre-season preparations under new head coach Marco Rose on July 1. And with the United States national team competing in the Nations League this month, Kehl also confirmed that the Black and Yellows expect Reyna to be back in training a few days later. This would give him enough time to take a break and recharge his batteries after the Nations League. But he will not be taking part in the Gold Cup.
Reyna made a total of 46 appearances across all competitions for the Black and Yellows this season. Only Marco Reus and Mats Hummels played in more games for BVB than the young attacking midfielder.
