Borussia Dortmund announced the signing of Stuttgart goalkeeper Gregor Kobel on Monday, with the Swiss shot stopper set to become the club’s new number one.

The summer transfer window has finally gotten off the ground at Borussia Dortmund as the first major piece of business is now complete and official: Gregor Kobel has joined from Stuttgart in a deal that will keep him with the club until 2026. Kobel is now the third Swiss shot stopper the club has brought into their ranks in a row. Die Schwarzgelben have long been said to prioritizing a freshening up of the position as out of favor Roman Bürki has not performed to the club’s expectations, and while Marwin Hitz put on admirable displays over the course of the season’s second half, it’s clear the club don’t want to make him their permanent fixture between the sticks.

While there were many players that the Borussia Dortmund bosses were seemingly looking at to succeed Bürki, it stands to reason that Kobel, with his youth, general performances for Stuttgart and his overall price tag fit quite comfortably for those in charge of the club. His ability to speak German and experience in the league were also likely some of the main assets Dortmund focused on when acquiring their new shot stopper.

With the new signing sealed and confirmed, we can certainly take a deeper dive into discovering just who Gregor Kobel actually is, and the skillset that has prompted Borussia Dortmund to put their faith in him to be their next go-to shot stopper.
