A closer look at new Borussia Dortmund signing Gregor Kobel
Final Thoughts
Overall, the signing of Gregor Kobel does seem like a typical Borussia Dortmund transfer; The player is young and has potential to become something special. Of course, Dortmund were linked to a plethora of keepers since the second half of the season began, some of whom may have struck more exciting or experienced signings.
The club has been generally good at targeting Bundesliga talents that have come in to help the squad and I have faith in the fact that Kobel will do the same. The fact of the matter remains that Dortmund have to do far more than sign a keeper, be it Kobel or otherwise if they want to challenge for silverware next season.
It’s clear to me from taking a closer look at Kobel that Dortmund have indeed signed a player who in many ways neutralizes some of the weaknesses the likes of Bürki and Hitz may display at times, as well as a player that has the potential to be a solid presence in goal for years to come. His commanding presence and ability to play the ball with his feet could be just what Dortmund need in goal.
He does however still display certain tendencies that we will simply have to see if he can improve on and adapt to fit the demands the club will make of him in goal. I for one will be hoping that his imposing frame is an absolute wall against opposition shots next season, and that Dortmund are vindicated in their choice this summer.
