Gio Reyna scored one goal and assisted another as the United States men’s national team came from behind to beat Mexico 3-2 in what was a thrilling CONCACAF Nations League final.

The USMNT got off to a poor start and conceded the opening goal in just the second minute of the game, with Jesus Corona taking advantage of some sloppy defending to make it 1-0 for Mexico. But Gio Reyna was in the right place at the right time to level the scores in the 27th minute. The Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder pounced on a lose ball after Weston McKennie hit the post.

The second half proved to be another tight and tense affair between the two arch-rivals. Mexico finally broke the deadlock in the 79th minute through Diego Lainez. But Weston McKennie headed home from Gio Reyna’s corner to make it 2-2 just three minutes later.

The game went into extra time and the drama continued both on the pitch and in the stands. United States were awarded a penalty in the 109th minute, which Christian Pulisic converted to give his country the lead. And Gio Reyna was hit by a bottle thrown from the stands while he celebrated the goal with his teammates.

Mexico had a golden chance to take the game to penalties when McKenzie was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box. But Ethan Horvath saved Andres Guardado’s spot-kick to see out the win.
