Borussia Dortmund and England midfielder Jude Bellingham has been voted VDV Newcomer of the Season by fellow players. It is an honor well deserved by the youngster, who played a large part in the success Dortmund celebrated this season.

Bellingham’s contributions included four goals and four assists across all competitions for Dortmund, with one of his most memorable strikes coming in the second leg of the clash with Manchester City. The talented youngster should have had two across both encounters with the Citizens, however poor officiating denied him the opportunity to extend his tally for the season. Bellingham also held an impressive 84.6% pass success percentage across all competitions this season, completing on average 35.6 passes per game.

Jude’s overall impact on Dortmund’s performances goes much further than those numbers suggest, however. As his passing number’s may allude, Bellingham was everywhere on the pitch for Die Schwarzgelben, running box to box and helping concoct dangerous play from the heart of midfield. He often played with maturity well beyond his years, showing everyone in his first season in the Bundesliga why there was so much excitement surrounding his signing in the summer.

Alongside Bellingham, two more Dortmund players made their way amongst the names mentioned by the VDV awards. Erling Haaland and Mats Hummels were voted into the VDV Team of the Season (VDV 11). Hummels racked up 36.9% of the votes, while Haaland joined him in the lineup with a whopping 61.7%  of the vote in his category to his name. The voting parties in these awards were players in the Bundesliga, 2. Bundesliga, the third division of German football as well as the regional leagues.

The players’ inclusion in these awards signifies that they have earned the respect of their peers and I would say is a good barometer for the type of talent Borussia Dortmund will field next season. Hummels, Haaland and Bellingham will all likely play key roles once again in any success Dortmund will attempt to achieve next season. One can hope that they can continue to put in the performances their peers have lauded them for, and that these performances will lead to more reasons for celebration in the season to come.
