Borussia Dortmund U23s promoted and ready – A closer look at the 3. Liga challenge that lies ahead

The 21-22 3. Liga season may be the most competitive yet

Looking forward to season next season, it might be the most attractive 3. Liga season yet. The competition this year includes a number of former Bundesliga stalwarts who will set the pace at the top of the league and put Borussia Dortmund’s young players through their paces.

Clubs in the 20 team division include Eintracht Braunschweig, VfL Osnabrück and Würzburger Kickers, who were relegated from the 2. Bundesliga. Waldhof Mannheim and 1. FC Saarbrücken will also be among the opponents next season. Hallescher FC, 1. FC Magdeburg and FSV Zwickau are clubs that bring plenty of DDR-Oberliga (the East-German league between 1948-1991) history to the competition.

Two-time German champions Viktoria Berlin, who won the unified German title in 1908 and 1911, are also promoted from the Regionalliga Nord-Ost curiously despite only playing 11 matches after the league was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The true giants, at least in terms of spectators numbers will be 1. FC Kaiserslautern and 1860 München, who average 19,000 and 15,000 supporters a game respectively.

3. Liga is not only in terms of spectators, but also in terms of honours won one of the great leagues of Europe. 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Eintracht Braunschweig, 1860 Munich have six Bundesliga titles between them, but who are the clubs most likely to be challenging for the title next season?
