Borussia Dortmund: Gregor Kobel added to Switzerland’s Euro 2020 squad

Switzerland have called up Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel to their squad as a replacement for the injured Jonas Omlin.
The Switzerland national team has announced that third choice goalkeeper Jonas Omlin suffered an ankle injury while warming up for their game against Wales on Saturday. He will not be able to take any further part in the European Championships as a result. New Borussia Dortmund signing Gregor Kobel has been called up as his replacement, and will join the Switzerland squad on Monday.
Kobel was called up by Switzerland for their training camp ahead of the Euros, but wasn’t included in their final 26-man squad for the tournament. But now the injury to Jonas Omlin presents him with an opportunity to gain some experience at the Euros. It remains to be seen if Kobel will get any playing time at the tournament, as Yann Sommer is Switzerland’s first choice goalkeeper.
Kobel is coming off an impressive campaign with VfB Stuttgart, and helped them secure a ninth place finish in their first season back in the Bundesliga. His performances for the Swabians prompted Borussia Dortmund to sign him for a fee of 15 million euros last month. The 23 year old will be the Black and Yellows’ first choice goalkeeper next season.
Kobel will join Borussia Dortmund teammate Manuel Akanji in the Switzerland squad. The centre-back played 90 minutes on Saturday, as Switzerland began their Euro 2020 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Wales. They return to action on Wednesday, as they go up against Group A leaders Italy in Rome.
