Borussia Dortmund: Jude Bellingham becomes the youngest player to ever feature at the Euros
Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham made history with his appearance for England in their 1-0 win over Croatia as he became the youngest player to feature at the European Championships.
It was another record setting day for one of Borussia Dortmund’s young talents as Jude Bellingham became the youngest player to appear for any country in the European Championships. The young English international was introduced in the 82nd minute, coming on for Harry Kane.
Jude Bellingham was quick to make an impact on the game, joining a midfield of Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice. He won a few impressive challenges early on and almost proved the catalyst for another English counter attack for his efforts. Bellingham’s form for the national team just seems to keep on improving and building on his senior debut against Austria, which caught many eyes and earned the youngster immense praise.
Bellingham has brought the same mentality he has been honing in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund to the international stage: youthful energy but maturity and decision making that would make many who watch him for the first time wonder if he is truly 17 or not. It will certainly be a joy to see just how much of an impact Bellingham has on this year’s European Championship push for England, but it’s safe to say he is already making himself known to any potential opposition.
A notable absentee from the England roster was Jadon Sancho. Sancho, alongside Chelsea left back Ben Chilwell, were left off the team sheet to accommodate for cover in other positions, according to England national team manager Gareth Southgate.
"“With the two boys that are out of the squad, it’s just unfortunate we can only name 23 and we’ve had to cover certain positions… I don’t like the fact we’re having to leave players out of the squad in a major tournament.” -Gareth Southgate, BBC Sport"
It is unfortunate that we haven’t been able to see Sancho play a role in the tournament just yet but as with Bellingham, we can expect that Dortmund’s impressive winger will make his impact on the pitch soon enough for his country.
