Late goals from Raphael Guerreiro and Cristiano Ronaldo (x2) helped Portugal begin their Euro 2020 campaign with a 3-0 win over Hungary.

Defending champions Portugal took on Hungary at a packed Puskas Arena in Budapest for their Euro 2020 opener on Tuesday. Fernando Santos’ side dominated proceedings but were kept at bay by a resilient Hungary side for the majority of the game. It was Borussia Dortmund left-back Raphael Guerreiro who finally broke Hungary’s resolve in the 84th minute. Although there was a fair share of luck involved in the goal.

Rafa Silva played a low cross into the box, which was met with an outside of the foot effort from Raphael Guerreiro. The shot took a big deflection off of Willi Orbán, leaving Péter Gulácsi stranded in goal.

Portugal were then awarded a penalty just two minutes later after Willi Orbán fouled Rafa Silva inside the box. And Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to make it 2-0 from the spot. The Juventus forward then doubled his tally in stoppage time to wrap up the win for his country. The goals helped Ronaldo take his goal tally in the Euros to 11 goals, making him the all-time top scorer in the competition’s history.

It wasn’t the best of performances from Portugal, but it was enough to help them get the three points. Next up for them is a trip to Munich to take on Germany on Saturday. Portugal then end their group stage campaign against France three days later, in what will be a repeat of the Euro 2016 final.
