Euro 2020: Germany salvage late draw against Hungary to set up last 16 clash against England
By Tushar Bahl
Germany needed an 84th minute equaliser from Leon Goretzka to rescue a 2-2 draw against Hungary and seal their place in the Euro 2020 round of 16.
Needing only a point to qualify for the last 16, Germany made a poor start to their game against Hungary and conceded in the 11th minute. Mainz 05 striker Adam Szalai gave Hungary the shock lead with a superb header past Manuel Neuer.
Mats Hummels came close to making it 1-1 for Germany, but his 22nd minute header hit the woodwork. The Borussia Dortmund defender then set up Germany’s equaliser in the 66th minute as he sent a looping header into the path of Kai Havertz, who made no mistake from close range.
But Gemany’s joy lasted mere seconds as Hungary struck again straight from the kick-off, with Andras Schafer taking advantage of some poor defending to make it 2-1. With Joachim Löw’s side facing an embarrassing early exit from the Euros, Leon Goretzka came off the bench and scored the equaliser six minutes from time.
The 2-2 draw was enough to help Germany finish second in Group F and seal a place in the Euro 2020 round of 16. Things don’t get any easier for Die Mannschaft in the next round, as a cracking contest against England at the Wembley Stadium awaits them.
Raphael Guerreiro and Portugal are also through to the last 16 following their 2-2 draw against France. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace to ensure that the defending champions qualified for the knockout phase of the tournament. Portugal’s third place finish sets up a mouth-watering round of 16 clash against Belgium.
