Reinier Jesus named in Brazil’s squad for the Olympics
Borussia Dortmund forward Reinier Jesus has been added to Brazil’s squad for the upcoming Olympic Games after FIFA authorised an increase to the squad size of participating teams.
Reinier Jesus is headed to Tokyo to take part in the Olympic Games after being added to Brazil’s squad for the tournament. The Borussia Dortmund forward wasn’t included in the original 18-man squad. But head coach Andre Jardine decided to add him to the list after FIFA allowed teams to name 22 players in their squads.
The football tournament at the Olympics will get underway on 21 July, with the final set to take place on 07 August. Brazil, who won the gold medal at the 2016 Games, will face Germany, Ivory Coast and Saudi Arabia in the group stage.
Renier’s involvement at the Olympics means that he will now miss the entire pre-season with Borussia Dortmund. The 19 year old will not return to Dortmund until August, and is also unlikely to be available the first few games of the new season.
Borussia Dortmund will begin the new season on August 06-09 with the first round of the DFB-Pokal. The Black and Yellows will then open their Bundesliga campaign against Eintracht Frankfurt on August 14/15, before taking on Bayern Munich in the DFL-Supercup on August 17.
Reinier, who joined Borussia Dortmund from Real Madrid on a two year loan deal last summer, is coming off a disappointing debut season in Germany. The highly rated forward was limited to 19 appearances across all competitions, and scored just one goal. He will now be hoping that good performances in Tokyo will help him return to Dortmund full of confidence as he looks to break into the starting XI next season.
