Mats Hummels has been one of the mainstays in the Borussia Dortmund defence over the last two years. Now the BVB bosses want to extend his contract.
Borussia Dortmund signed Mats Hummels from Bayern Munich on a three year contract in 2019. SportBILD reported in November that his contract will be automatically extended if he makes 22 appearances in the upcoming season. Now BVB are ready to circumvent this clause and extend his contract in any case.
This is being reported by WAZ, who add that Borussia Dortmund are thinking about extending his contract for an even longer period.
Hummels has done a great job of leading the Borussia Dortmund defence since making his return to the club in 2019. He formed a solid partnership with Manuel Akanji towards the end of last season, and helped the Black and Yellows qualify for the Champions League and win the DFB-Pokal.
The 32 year old’s performances saw him earn a recall to the Germany squad for the European Championships. And he was one of Germany’s best performers at Euro 2020.
Hummels is set to play an integral role for Borussia Dortmund in the upcoming season. The defender said in May that he wants to keep playing for as long as physically possible.
Manuel Akanji, who is coming off an impressive Euro 2020 campaign with Switzerland, will likely join Mats Hummels in the heart of the Borussia Dortmund defence next season. Dan-Axel Zagadou and new signing Soumaila Coulibaly are the other defensive options available to Marco Rose going into the new season.
