Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels is still suffering from the patellar tendon issue that affected him during the Euros. And he could potentially miss the start of the season as a result.

Mats Hummels is suffering from an inflammation of the patellar tendon in his knee, which has been causing him pain for a few months now. This is being reported by Kicker, who claim that it is currently unclear whether he will be fit in time for Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga opener against Eintracht Frankfurt on August 14.

Hummels is currently on vacation after taking part in Euro 2020 with Germany. Kicker add that rest is essential for his injury to heal completely. The 32 year old is expected to link up with the Borussia Dortmund squad during the training camp in Switzerland later this month. But he will not be able to take part in full training straight away.

Kicker also add that neither Hummels nor Borussia Dortmund will want to take the risk of the injury flaring up again. If necessary, both sides are more likely to a longer break as a precaution than rush his return.

Not having Hummels available for the start of the season would be a big blow for Borussia Dortmund, who are also expected to be without Dan-Axel Zagadou and Soumaila Coulibaly for a while. Hummels’ potential absence would leave Manuel Akanji as the only fit senior centre-back in the squad. Marco Rose used highly rated duo Nnamdi Collins and Albin Thaqi in central defence during the pre-season friendly against FC Gießen on Tuesday.
