Marcel Schmelzer back in individual training after 13-month injury lay-off
Borussia Dortmund left-back Marcel Schmelzer has taken another big step on his road to recovery by returning to the pitch to take part in individual training.
Marcel Schmelzer suffered a knee injury in June 2020 which forced him to have surgery. He has been out of action ever since, but it looks like he is now on the comeback trail. According to Ruhr Nachrichten, the 33 year old completed an individual training session on Borussia Dortmund’s main training ground on Thursday afternoon.
Schmelzer’s Borussia Dortmund contract was due to expire at the end of last season. But the Black and Yellows extended his contract so he could continue his rehab at the club. If the left-back wants to play for another club after returning to full fitness, he will be given the opportunity to do so.
Michael Zorc said in May that Borussia Dortmund want to bring Marcel Schmelzer back to the club in a non-playing role following the end of his playing career.
Youssoufa Moukoko also completed an individual training session on Thursday afternoon. The young striker has been out since the end of March with a foot ligament injury. He should be fully fit in time for the Bad Ragaz training camp.
Ruhr Nachrichten also add that Felix Passlack suffered an ankle injury during Tuesday’s game against FC Gießen and has to take a break for the time being. It remains to be seen when he will be able to train again.
Borussia Dortmund are set to play two 45-minute friendlies on Saturday, against MSV Duisburg and VfL Bochum.
