Enrico Maaßen satisfied with pre-season as Borussia Dortmund II get ready for 3. Liga opener
Borussia Dortmund II open their 3. Liga campaign this weekend, and head coach Enrico Maaßen is satisfied with his team’s pre-season preparation.
Less than two months after winning promotion from the Regionalliga West, Borussia Dortmund II kick off their 3. Liga campaign this weekend with a trip to FSV Zwickau. The young Black and Yellows played their final pre-season friendly ahead of the 3. Liga opener on Sunday, as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Regionalliga West side Preußen Münster.
Enrico Maaßen was not able to use a number of his regular players in Sunday’s game, as they had played 45 minutes in the first-team’s pre-season friendly against VfL Bochum just one day earlier. Despite the result against Preußen Münster, Maaßen was pleased with his side’s efforts after an intense week of preparation. The BVB II head coach added that he is now looking forward to getting started in the 3. Liga.
"“It was a very intense test,” Maaßen said. “I think we faced a good opponent. The game ended a very intense week for us. We had to be very flexible. Yesterday we had a whole XI of us in Duisburg. The result should be of secondary importance after this week.”“Of course, the preparation was also about integrating the new guys quickly and well. We have succeeded in doing that. We’ve all seen what the team can do and what we still need to work on. This weekend, the focus was on making sure we all came through in good shape and healthy. We have achieved that. Now it’s a matter of regenerating and preparing for Zwickau from Tuesday onwards.”"
Borussia Dortmund II are in store for an exciting season in the third division of German football. They have bolstered their squad with the arrivals of a number of talented players including Antonios Papadopoulos, who earned praise from first-team head coach Marco Rose after his impressive performance in Saturday’s pre-season friendly against VfL Bochum. Another new signing Marco Pasalic was on target in that game.
Enrico Maaßen has done an excellent job since taking over as Borussia Dortmund II head coach in 2020. He led the team to the Regionalliga West title in his first season in charge. And he will now be aiming to build on that success in the 3. Liga this season.
