Number Four: vs Paderborn (Bundesliga 19/20 season)

Borussia Dortmund’s trip to Paderborn proved to be a productive fixture for the team, but especially for Jadon Sancho as he scored his first ever professional hat-trick.

Borussia Dortmund had just gone up 1-0 through Thorgan Hazard’s opener, and Sancho quickly added a second. Thomas Delaney played Julian Brandt in behind, and Sancho got open at the back post with a well timed run. Brandt found him for a simple finish to score his first of the night.

Sancho’s second finish would also immediately follow a goal, this time he scored within two minutes of Paderborn pulling one back to make it 2-1. Hazard was played in behind this time and cut it back to Sancho on the edge of the box. Sancho patiently brought it onto his left back, got his shot off between three Paderborn defenders and restored Dortmund’s two goal lead.

With Dortmund up 5-1 in stoppage time, Sancho was sent through on goal with a chance for a hat-trick. Hazard’s presence in the middle prevented Jamilu Collins from closing in on Sancho, and as the Englishmen made his way into the box it was clear how the attack would end. He finished at the near post to complete his hat-trick and cap off the memorable performance.

While fourth seems low for this outing, the importance and opposition slightly hold it back. It came a week after Bayern beat Dortmund to effectively end the title race, and Paderborn would go on to be relegated that month. Not to mention the high quality of the games mentioned next. Still, it was an impressive and unforgettable milestone for Jadon Sancho.
