Axel Witsel hasn’t played for Borussia Dortmund since he suffered a torn achilles tendon in January. And the midfielder is delighted to finally be back in training.

The majority of Borussia Dortmund Euro 2020 participants linked up with the rest of the squad at the training camp in Bad Ragaz this week. One of the returning players is Axel Witsel, who is back at BVB after six months away.

Witsel tore his achilles tendon in January and then did his rehab in Belgium. And after completing a remarkable comeback at the European Championships, he is now raring to get going again with the Black and Yellows.

Witsel spoke about his comeback, his goals for the season and new head coach Marco Rose during the media round on Friday. The Belgian international said that he almost feels like a new player at Borussia Dortmund after spending so much time away from the club.

"“It’s been a long time. I almost feel like a new player because I haven’t seen the guys and everyone at the club for six months. I’m very happy to be back and I feel very good.”"

With so many injuries in defence, Borussia Dortmund are set to start the season with only one fit centre-back. And Witsel said that while central defence is not his natural position, he would be happy to play in that role if the need arises.

"“It’s not my position. Everyone knows I prefer to play in defensive midfield. But if we don’t have enough defenders or if there are other reasons for me to play there, then I will help the team. No problem.”"

Witsel was also asked about his goals of the season, and whether BVB can fight for the league title. The 32 year old believes that the Black and Yellows need to be more consistent in their game if they want to improve on how they fared last season.

"“I prefer to talk about our collective goals, because that’s more important. Everyone wants to be champions. But for that we need to be more consistent in our game. That’s the most important thing for the coming season. Then we can definitely achieve more than we did last season.”"

Witsel showed his quality for Belgium during the Euros. And he will certainly have a key role to play this season as Borussia Dortmund look to fight in three competitions.
