Reinier scored the winning penalty as Brazil qualified for the final of the Olympic Games after beating Mexico 4-1 on penalties in the semi-finals (0-0 AET).

Brazil went up against Mexico in the semi-finals of the Olympic Games in Kashima on Tuesday, looking to qualify for their third successive final. On-loan Borussia Dortmund forward Reinier started on the bench once again for the defending Olympic champions.

Brazil dominated the game right from the start and had the better chances to score in the first half. But they weren’t able to make their advantage count as Mexico defended with great resolve. The second half was a fairly cagey affair, with both teams determined to keep things tight at the back.

Looking to find a creative spark, Brazil decided to bring on Reinier in the 73rd minute. But the 19 year old wasn’t able to help his side find a late winner. Richarlison came close to scoring for Brazil in the 82nd minute, but his effort hit the post. Extra time failed to produce a goal either, and so the game went to penalties.

Mexico’s Eduardo Aguirre and Johan Vasquez both missed their spot-kicks, allowing Brazil to race to a 3-1 lead in the penalty shootout. Reinier stepped up with the chance to win the game for his country. And he made no mistake from 12 yards out, sending Brazil into the final of the Olympic Games.
