Erling Haaland began his 2021/22 season with a hat-trick as Borussia Dortmund cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.

It was the Erling Haaland show once again as his hat-trick helped Borussia Dortmund begin the Marco Rose era with a 3-0 win over third division side SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.

Taking charge of his first competitive game as Borussia Dortmund head coach, Marco Rose decided to go with the diamond formation. Erling Haaland and Steffen Tigges started as the two strikers, with Marco Reus behind them in the number ten role. Jude Bellingham made it to the starting XI despite just returning to training on Monday.

Borussia Dortmund made a strong start to the game and came close to scoring on a number of occasions in the first half. Erling Haaland had two shots cleared off line, while Marco Reus forced an excellent save with his free-kick from 25 yards out.

The pressure finally paid off in the 26th minute when Reus set Haaland up for Borussia Dortmund’s opener. The Norwegian international was then brought down inside the box soon after, and doubled his tally from the spot in the 31st minute.

The Black and Yellows continued their dominance after half-time. And Haaland completed his hat-trick five minutes into the start of the second half to secure the win and BVB’s progress into the second round of the DFB-Pokal.

Donyell Malen also came on for his Borussia Dortmund debut in the second half. And he showed some good flashes of his quality. The Netherlands international nearly got on the scoresheet late on, but his shot was well saved by the Wiesbaden goalkeeper. Axel Witsel also made his first Borussia Dortmund appearance since January, coming off the bench to replace Jude Bellingham.

Marco Rose will no doubt be delighted with some of the football his side played against SV Wehen Wiesbaden. Borussia Dortmund were in control of the game for the majority of the 90 minutes. And had they done a better job of taking their chances, it would have been an even bigger victory.
