Borussia Dortmund began their season with a 3-0 win over SV Wehen Wiesbaden on Saturday. And Marco Reus was pleased with the high number of options playing in the diamond formation gave them.
Borussia Dortmund showed a glimpse of what fans can expect from them this season with an impressive attacking performance against SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on Saturday.
Head coach Marco Rose went with the diamond formation for his first competitive game in charge of the club. Erling Haaland and Steffen Tigges started as the two strikers, with Marco Reus behind them in the number ten role. Gio Reyna and Jude Bellingham played as the two deep lying playmakers, while Mahmoud Dahoud started as the lone defensive midfielder.
The diamond formation worked really well against SV Wehen Wiesbaden, as Borussia Dortmund dominated the game, played some beautiful football and created a number of good chances over the course of the 90 minutes. And the BVB captain certainly appears to be a fan of the new system.
"“We have an incredible number of options,” Reus said. “You always have superiority in numbers in the middle. You can make up for the lack of width via the full-backs. We can play direct a lot, we have two strikers who give us depth and tie up the defenders.”"
Reus also praised Erling Haaland, who scored a hat-trick to lead Borussia Dortmund to a dominant win over SV Wehen Wiesbaden on Saturday. “You always forget that he is still so young. He gives us so many possibilities, especially with his pace. That’s incredibly important. He needs to stay hungry.”
Reus also looked ahead to next weekend’s Bundesliga opener. The 32 year old is excited to have fans back at the Signal Iduna Park. “We are optimistic and full of excitement. The fans will be back again. Today was already a little taste of that. We’re looking forward to it.”
Borussia Dortmund have two big games coming up over the next ten days. The Black and Yellows begin their Bundesliga campaign against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, before taking on Bayern Munich for the DFL-Supercup three days later.
