Erling Haaland scored two goals and set up a further three as Borussia Dortmund began their Bundesliga campaign with a 5-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Borussia Dortmund supporters were treated to the Erling Haaland show on their return to the Signal Iduna Park, as the striker led his side to an emphatic opening day win over Eintracht Frankfurt. Haaland scored two, while Marco Reus, Thorgan Hazard and Gio Reyna were also on target to give the Black and Yellows a dream start to their Bundesliga season.

Marco Rose made two changes to the side that defeated SV Wehen Wiesbaden last weekend. Axel Witsel slotted in at centre-back, replacing Antonios Papadopoulos. While Thorgan Hazard came into the team for Steffen Tigges.

Borussia Dortmund made an excellent start to the game, showing the intensity and pressing demanded by Marco Rose. And they were rewarded for their strong start in the 23rd minute, when Marco Reus found the bottom corner after being played in by Erling Haaland.

Reus’ opener sent the 25,000 supporters at the Signal Iduna Park into raptures. Dortmund’s joy was short lived though, as Felix Passlack inadvertently put the ball into his own net from the edge of the box to give Eintracht Frankfurt an equaliser out of nowhere.

But the Black and Yellows did not let up. And they restored their advantage in the 32nd minute through Thorgan Hazard. Haaland then turned from provider to goalscorer just two minutes later, as he finished coolly past Kevin Trapp to make it 3-1. Marco Reus then had a goal chalked off late in the first half, but BVB still went into the break with a two goal lead to show for their dominance.

Eintracht Frankfurt began the second half well, and Gregor Kobel was forced into making a good save. But Gio Reyna made sure of the three points in the 58th minute as he reacted quickly to turn the ball into the back of the net after more good work by Haaland. The Norwegian international then made it 5-1 in the 70th minute after being played through on goal by Marco Reus. Jens Petter Hauge pulled a goal back for Eintracht Frankfurt late on, but Borussia Dortmund cruised to a comfortable win in the end.

Two defensive lapses aside, it was an almost perfect performance from Marco Rose’s side. Borussia Dortmund looked ruthless and dangerous every time they ventured forward. And they can now go into Tuesday’s DFL Supercup clash against Bayern Munich with confidence and momentum on side.
