The Goalkeepers

After a difficult and all too often inconsistent season, Roman Bürki has been replaced as Borussia Dortmund’s first choice goalkeeper. He lost his spot to Marwin Hitz last season and now finds himself as third choice at the club. Last season was a disappointing one for the former number one, the solid performances that led to 13 clean sheets in 2019-20 seemed a distant memory in contrast to the 4 achieved in 2020-21.

With Bürki and Hitz both failing to stake a claim to be the long-term number one, the door appeared wide open for a new goalkeeper at Westfalenstadion.

The choice of the new number one has fallen on Gregor Kobel, who joined BVB for a fee of 15 million euros from VFB Stuttgart. The highly rated Kobel has already made quite an impression on those at the club, and he produced an impressive performance on his Bundesliga debut against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Kobel has a reputation for being a sweeper keeper who is not afraid to get off his line. He will provide Borussia Dortmund with the ability to dispel danger outside the box. The 23 year old is regarded as having good judgement for being a good shot-stopper. He is also handy with his feet and adept at saving penalties. Kobel’s performances last season earned him the accolade of being a ‘monster in goal’ from Stuttgart head coach Matarazzo.

Marwin Hitz is now the second choice goalkeeper once again, with Roman Bürki free to leave this summer for a cut-price fee.

For young goalkeeper Luca Unbehaun, the opportunity of breaking into the first-team (at least for the moment) looks to be limited, the Bochum-born keeper is firmly anchored into the U23 set-up and that is unlikely to change at least in the short term in the highly demanding 3. Liga.
