Sloppy Borussia Dortmund beaten by Bayern Munich in the DFL-Supercup

Robert Lewandowski scored a brace as Bayern Munich handed Borussia Dortmund a 3-1 defeat in the 2021 DFL-Supercup.
Borussia Dortmund were made to pay for their sloppy defensive mistakes, as Bayern Munich took full advantage to retain the DFL-Supercup. Robert Lewandowski scored twice against his former club, and Thomas Müller was also on target for the Bavarians. Marco Reus found the back of the net for Borussia Dortmund with a gorgeous curling effort, but it wasn’t enough in the end.
Marco Rose made just one change to the team that defeated Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Youssoufa Moukoko came into the side for the injured Thorgan Hazard. While Axel Witsel slotted in at centre-back once again.
Borussia Dortmund looked nervous in the early stages of the game, and gifted Bayern a number of chances in the first half. The Black and Yellows had a few chances of their own though. Both Marco Reus and Erling Haaland forced really good saves from Manuel Neuer. While Youssoufa Moukoko had a goal ruled out for offside.
Bayern took the lead four minutes before the break, with Robert Lewandowski heading home the opening goal of the game. The Poland international made a well-timed late run into the box and powered his header past Gregor Kobel.
Borussia Dortmund’s sloppy defending continued to haunt them in the second half, as they allowed Alphonso Davies to run in behind on the left flank. Davies’ cross somehow found its way towards Thomas Müller via a deft flick from Robert Lewandowski. And the playmaker had a simple tap in to make it 2-0.
The Black and Yellows now needed something special to get back into the game. And sure enough, it arrived through Marco Reus. The Borussia Dortmund captain whipped a stunning first-time effort past Manuel Neuer to halve the deficit for his side. But just as Marco Rose’s side were starting to dominate proceedings, Manuel Akanji lost the ball to Corentin Tolisso outside the Dortmund box. The ball fell kindly for Robert Lewandowski, who beat Kobel with ease from close range.
Borussia Dortmund had a few half-chances in the final 15 minutes. But Bayern saw the game through to win the DFL-Supercup for the ninth time in their history.
