Sebastian Kehl: Borussia Dortmund “prepared for all scenarios” in the transfer market
Sebastian Kehl has hinted that Borussia Dortmund could be active again in the transfer market in the coming days.
The past week has been a bit of a deflating one for Borussia Dortmund. Defeats to Bayern Munich and SC Freiburg have soured what was a bright start with a big win over Eintracht Frankfurt on matchday one of the season.
These results have done a lot to highlight just what this team’s strengths can be, but they have also shone a light on the glaring weaknesses the squad still has to contend with. Borussia Dortmund’s head of players’ department Sebastian Kehl has made comments that seem to indicate that the club’s hire ups may look to dip into the transfer market yet again if the opportunity arises.
The former Borussia Dortmund captain told Sky:
"“There is currently some movement [on the transfer market] again. Let’s wait and see what happens in the coming days. We are prepared for all scenarios.”"
His comments were supported by current sporting director Michael Zorc, who told Sport1 on Sunday:
"“We are always re-evaluating the situation and looking around. Aki Watzke has made it clear that, for economic reasons, we will not do anything unless another player leaves us. But of course we are looking around. We still have a few days.”"
The fact that Borussia Dortmund have been waiting to sell players in order to make additions is something that has been well known over the course of this transfer window. Hans-Joachim Watzke made it clear earlier this month that the Black and Yellows will operate cautiously in the transfer market this summer.
There have been links to RB Leipzig’s Marcel Halstenberg in recent months, with reports now claiming that a deal could be close.
One player who could leave the club in order to make room financially for new signings is Thomas Delaney. He has been heavily linked with a move to Sevilla. Delaney has just had a strong Euro campaign with Denmark that makes him an attractive prospect for other clubs, much more so than other players Dortmund may be more keen to part ways with.
Delaney also plays in a position that has become quite stacked since the renaissance of Mahmoud Dahoud and the acquisition of Jude Bellingham. While they aren’t like for like players, Marco Rose seems to prefer the two to the Dane, which would signal that it may be best for all parties if a transfer did happen.
The hope is that in letting go of a player like Delaney, the club will do its best to address the most glaring issue we’ve seem come to light in the first three games; the lack of proper depth in the full-back positions, and perhaps in central defence as well. Having started Felix Passlack for three games in a row, Rose and his team should certainly see that that is a need for more competition and quality in the position. Passlack has been exploited on three occasions now by teams and it would be dangerous to expect him to be the only cover for Thomas Meunier and the injured Mateu Morey.
With the transfer window open for eight more days still, it will be interesting to see whether Borussia Dortmund look to bring any new players.
