Bundesliga Roundup: Bayern survive Köln scare, Borussia Dortmund stunned by Freiburg
Matchday two of the 2021/22 Bundesliga season saw RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen enjoy big wins. While Bayern Munich survived a scare against FC Köln.
RB Leipzig and VfB Stuttgart kicked off matchday two on Friday, and Jesse Marsch’s side earned a resounding win. Dominik Szoboszlai scored a brace, and Emil Forsberg and Andre Silva were also on target as RB Leipzig thumped Stuttgart 4-0.
Bayern Munich were made to work hard but got the job done in the end against FC Köln to register their first Bundesliga win of the season. After a goalless first half, Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry scored to give the defending champions a two goal lead. But Köln scored twice in three minutes through Anthony Modeste and Mark Uth to get themselves back on level terms. Gnabry then scored what proved to be the winner for Bayern in the 71st minute.
Borussia Dortmund suffered a shock 2-1 defeat away to SC Freiburg. Vincenzo Grifo’s stunning free-kick gave Freiburg the early lead, before Roland Sallai doubled their advantage in the second half. An own goal from Yannik Keitel then brought the Black and Yellows back in the game. But Marco Rose’s side weren’t able to find an equaliser.
Wolfsburg came from behind to beat Hertha Berlin 2-1 and move to the top of the Bundesliga standings. Hertha took the lead at the hour mark through Dodi Lukébakio. But goals from Ridle Baku and Lukas Nmecha helped Wolfsburg turn things around late on. Mark van Bommel’s side are now the only Bundesliga team left with a 100% record this season.
Bayer Leverkusen handed Borussia Mönchengladbach a 4-0 defeat. Patrik Schick, Moussa Diaby and Nadiem Amiri were all on target for Gerardo Seoane’s side to seal a resounding win. Newly promoted side VfL Bochum registered their first of the season as they beat Mainz 05 2-0. Goals from Gerrit Holtmann and Sebastian Polter gave last season’s 2. Bundesliga champions a memorable win.
Union Berlin and TSG Hoffenheim played out an entertaining 2-2 draw. The Berliners took the lead through Niko Gießelmann, before goals from Kevin Akpoguma and Jacob Bruun Larsen helped Hoffenheim turn things around. Taiwo Awoniyi then made it 2-2 in the second half to rescue a point for his side.
Augsburg remain the only Bundesliga team without a goal so far this season. They held Eintracht Frankfurt to a 0-0 draw on Saturday. SpVgg Greuther Fürth also earned their first point of the new season on Saturday, as they came from behind to hold Arminia Bielefeld to a 1-1 draw.
