Michael Zorc: Jürgen Klopp my best ever signing as Borussia Dortmund sporting director
By Tushar Bahl
Michael Zorc views former Borussia Dortmund head coach Jürgen Klopp as his best ever signing as the club’s sporting director.
Michael Zorc has been the Borussia Dortmund sporting director since 1998. Under his helm, the Black and Yellows have signed some of the world’s most talented players and coaches who have gone on to make a big impact for the club. But the 58 year old believes that Jürgen Klopp is the best signing he has ever made as sporting director.
Zorc said that Borussia Dortmund had a real stroke of luck with the appointment of Klopp as head coach, and the 54 year old shaped an era at the club.
"“Absolutely,” Zorc said on the WDR2 podcast Einfach Fußball when asked if Klopp is the best signing he has ever made at BVB. “Because he shaped an era with us that was and still is unique and difficult to repeat. That was a period of five years that has rarely existed in the entire history of Borussia Dortmund, even over 100 years.”"
Jürgen Klopp became Borussia Dortmund head coach in 2008, joining the club from Mainz 05 despite interest from Bayern Munich. Over the course of his seven year spell with the club, he won two Bundesliga titles and the DFB-Pokal. Klopp also led the club to the UEFA Champions League final in the 2012/13 season. The impact he had at Borussia Dortmund will certainly never be forgotten.
Jürgen Klopp: Borussia Dortmund have the squad to cause Bayern problems
Meanwhile, Jürgen Klopp believes that the Borussia Dortmund squad is strong enough to cause Bayern Munich problems in the Bundesliga title race this season. Klopp did not want to comment on which team is the favourite to win the title, but he did say that squad depth will be crucial to both teams’ hopes. In an interview with BILD, Klopp said:
"“The chance for Dortmund is there. A season is long, and the really intensive phase starts after the next international break,” Klopp said. “That’s when squad depth is needed. Dortmund has a good squad. Whether it’s better than Bayern’s, I don’t know, but it’s good enough to cause Bayern problems.”"
Borussia Dortmund will be aiming to be crowned Bundesliga champions this season, having not won the title since the 2011/12 season.
