Rumour: Borussia Dortmund interested in signing Valentino Lazaro?
Borussia Dortmund are being linked with a move for another versatile wide player, with Austrian international Valentino Lazaro reportedly a player attracting their interest.
With the summer transfer window open for a few days still, and Borussia Dortmund looking thin in certain positions going into their third Bundesliga game of the campaign, rumors have continued to swirl in abundance regarding who they may look to bring in to shore up their roster. Marcel Halstenberg is one name Die Schwarzgelben reportedly hold an interest in, but the main concerns the club seems to have pinpointed are the right wing and the right back positions.
Both positions seem to be relatively thin at the moment, and one name mentioned as a potential target could help fill in the gaps in both. That name is Valentino Lazaro. According to Sport1, Borussia Dortmund could be interested in bringing the Austrian international to the Westfalenstadion before the window closes. He worked with current head coach Marco Rose in Gladbach last year, and it would seem that there is no place for the winger at current club Inter Milan.
Meanwhile, Ruhr Nachrichten say that Borussia Dortmund did make informal contact with Lazaro. But the player is in promising talks with Benfica, and it is much more likely that he will play there this season.
The pros of a move for Lazaro are pretty evident; his positional flexibility, prior Bundesliga experience and overall affordability could see him fit the bill quite nicely for Dortmund. That being said, his stats and game time over the course of the last few seasons have been iffy at best.
He last impressed for Hertha Berlin in the 2018/19 season, scoring 3 and assisting a further 7 in 31 appearances. His stints with Newcastle United and Inter Milan were underwhelming, while Marco Rose only used the player in 22 games last season for Gladbach.
With Benfica leading the race for Lazaro, chances of him joining Borussia Dortmund this summer appear to be very slim at the moment anyways.
